A Look At Some Classic “Monster In The Closet” Films

When it comes to childhood fears and legends, there’s one story that seems to stand out above the rest: the monster in the closet. Here at Closet and Storage Concepts, we’re of the opinion that there’s nothing better than a wonderful, custom built closet; regardless, the tradition continues, with each new generation spending countless nights staring at their closed closet doors wondering what evil might be lurking behind them. Although it’s impossible to nail down the exact origin of this pervasive urban legend, there have certainly been a number of movies that utilize the monster-in-the-closet trope to terrifying effect, and we’ve put together a list of some of the more enduring examples. Read on to find out which classic horror films made our list, and here’s wishing you a Happy Halloween from everyone at Closet and Storage Concepts!

Boogeyman (2005)

When it comes to monsters in the closet, there’s none more famous than the Boogeyman. There are a number of different riffs on this bone-chattering tale, but the main Boogeyman myth tends to center around a mythical creature that hides in the closet waiting for a child to sleep. Many of the Boogeyman myths describe a creature that scares children that have been naughty, but Boogeyman the movie takes that to a whole other level. The protagonist Tim must return to his childhood home, where over the course of the movie he battles the Boogeyman living in his closet. We can’t say whether a better closet system would have kept the Boogeyman at bay, but we do know that a custom storage system never hurts!

They (2002)

Wes Craven is a master of the horror genre, and with 2002’s They he finally asks, “Just what is hiding in your closet?” The film follows around Julia and a number of her peers, all of who experienced fear of the closet as children. Whereas most adults only fear the mess inside their closet caused by outdated and inefficient storage solutions, Julia and her cohorts are tormented by mysterious creatures that emerge from the closet at night. Throughout the film, we find out that not only are these monsters real, but they reside in another dimension that can only be accessed through human closets. We’ve spent a lot of time in more closets than you can count, and although we’ve never discovered any monsters, we can recommend this movie for a great Halloween night fright.

Monster In The Closet (1986)

The title says it all. Monster in the Closet is a slightly silly take on the classic story, which is likely what you’ll need after watching the two other teeth-clenchers on this list. Produced by the same studio responsible for The Toxic Avenger, Monster In The Closet starts off with a number of grisly murders having taken place inside San Francisco closets. A reporter and a scientist then descend upon the scene in an attempt to find out what monsters really are taking up residence in your closet. Featuring a young Paul Walker, this flick takes the monster in the closet story and flips it on its head, showing just how silly it is to be afraid of something as benign as a wardrobe. Although there are still some scary scenes, Monster in the Closet is more about fun than fright.

Trick_Or_Treat-boo

If you’re the kind of person with a closet or two stacked to the brim with out of season junk, you likely spend most of the year trying to decide how to get your life reorganized. Here at Closet and Storage Concepts, we’re in the business of helping people just like you with new beautiful, custom storage solutions. There is, however, one time a year when our friends with cartoonish, overstuffed closets may have the last laugh – Halloween. For a slight change of pace this month, we’ve put together a list of a few quick and easy Halloween costumes you can pull off with things located in your disorganized closet. Read on to find out more, and as soon as the holiday has passed, contact Closet and Storage Concepts to start getting back on track with a well-organized life!

Joel (Tom Cruise) From Risky Business

If you’re the kind of person that doesn’t mind spending a few hours at a party in a pair of briefs, Tom Cruise’s character Joel from Risky Business is a great last minute costume you can likely pull straight from your overstuffed closet. The most famous scene from the movie features Tom Cruise is a men’s dress shirt, a pair of sunglasses, some tube socks, and your finest pair of tighty whities. This costume can work for either a man or a woman (ladies, feel free to pillage your husband’s underwear drawer), and anyone with a closet storage problem is sure to have at least a few of these items on hand.

Rosie the Riveter

Another classic costume that can be easily culled from your closet, Rosie the Riveter is almost as easy to put together as the Risky Business costume outlined above. First, dig through your disorganized closet for a pair of old jeans and a denim or dark blue work shirt. You’re already halfway there! Next, dive into your accessories drawer and pull out either a bandana or, even better, a polka dot scarf. Tie that bad boy around your head, put on some white Converse, and there you have it: a quick and easy Rosie the Riveter costume made up of only excess items in your closet!

Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz

This costume is perfect for the dog lovers out there that don’t want to leave Fido at home on Halloween night. If you’ve got an overflowing craft closet in your home, this costume will be a breeze to put together. Start by finding a simple blue dress, preferably gingham if you have it in your closet, as well as the brightest pair of red heels you have. Next, layer it over a white blouse. Dive into your craft closet and find that basket you’ve been hoarding since last Thanksgiving to carry your very own Toto around in, and voila: you’ve got a simple Dorothy costume pulled directly from your closet.

If All Else Fails, Grab a Sheet!

If you have a disorganized closet but still can’t find what you need for the costumes listed above, there’s always the ever-trusty white bed sheet. With a bed sheet at your disposal, there are all kinds of costumes you can make work. Have a pair of scissors? Cut out some eye holes and go as a ghost. If that sounds a bit bulky for you, simply tie the sheet around you like a toga and off you go. Happen to have a red sheet available? Tie it around your neck and suddenly you’re the most powerful super hero in the world. With a bed sheet and a bit of imagination, you’ll be on your way in no time.

Here at Closet and Storage Concepts, we’re experts when it comes to home storage solutions. Whether you’re in need of a new kitchen pantry or a better-organized garage, Closet and Storage Concepts is sure to have exactly what you’re looking for. Before you spring for a new home organizing system, you may be asking yourself, “Just what are the benefits of a well organized home?” Aside from the general aesthetics of a clean and organized space, there are a number of reasons why getting your home’s storage system in order will have a big effect on your life. We’ve put together a few of the biggest benefits of a well organized home, so read on to find out what a new storage system from Closet and Storage Concepts can do for you and your family!
Makes You Far More Productive
Most of us are so busy with the day-to-day activities family life requires that the rest of our time is at a premium. If your home is a disorganized mess, it can make that extra time you have that much less productive. If you work from the home, this point is even more salient: imagine the time you’ll save not having to look for that one item you need for twenty minutes. When your home is well organized, you’ll save tons of time completing tasks and projects because you won’t have to waste any time looking for this or that. Productivity tends to skyrocket in a well-organized space, and your home is no different from the office in that regard. If you can create a great storage system in your home, you’ll likely see your general productivity begin to climb.
Cuts Down On Stress
When you’re forced to spend forty five minutes trying to find your spare hair dryer, not only are you cutting into time you could be spending on other projects, you’re also creating a lot of unnecessary stress for yourself. There’s nothing more infuriating than looking for a single item for a long period of time, and it’s in these situations that we can often see stress levels start to shoot up. Not only does stress have a negative impact on your relationships with others, it can also be a detriment to your health. Imagine this scenario: rather than digging through your junk drawer to find your spare key, you know exactly where it is every time you need to use it. That’s a whole lot of stress suddenly caught from your day-to-day.
Great Effects On Your Family Life
This last point is tied to the prior two in some ways, but it’s still worth mentioning: a well organized home can have myriad positive effects on your family life. Not only will you be less stressed out and far more productive, but also those improvements will lead to better quality time with your family. If you don’t have to spend every morning digging through your son’s closet to find his rain gear, you’ll buy some extra time to sit together and have breakfast. Not only does an organized home get you more time to spend with your family, but it is also a great influence on your growing children, helping them to build habits that will benefit them for the rest of their life. If there’s a better reason to get your storage system in order than that, we sure can’t think of it.
