Quick Office Organization Tips

An office is an important area in a home because it must foster productivity, but it can often be one of the first places where clutter grows. If your home office is on display and used by many different family members it can be even more stressful to keep clean. Your time is precious, here’s how to make the most of it with some quick and easy office organization tips from Closet and Storage Concepts.

Stationary Clean Out

The office tends to be a place for paperwork, paper, and more paper. This is the leading cause of what tends to clutter an office not just in appearance, but also in functionality. To cut down on the paper consider not only the bills and important documents but also sticky notes, printer paper, and other stationary goods. See what can be discarded or shredded. While you’re at it, tackle your penholder. Discard any pens and markers that are out of ink or any unusable pencils.

Sort and Remove

The office is often a place where bills are paid, letters come in, and piles build up. Take a quick minute to sort through your piles or unread mail and discard junk mail. Remove items that don’t belong in the office, whether it’s the toy your child left or the cup that needs to be washed.

Proper Placement

The good thing with a quick organizing session is that it allows you to identify items that don’t belong. But just haphazardly placing items back into areas won’t solve your home organizational problems in the long run. Be sure to put items away in their designated areas; it only takes a few extra seconds. With paperwork, be sure to go through and place them in the right folder or drawer. Even putting away that one paperclip can help for a cleaner more organized office.

Clean Down

A good wipe down and dust after you’ve removed your piles and refreshed your desk can do wonders to faking a space that looks like you’ve been cleaning all day. If you’re short on time, just pay attention to the most easily seen items such as the tops of your desk, computer monitor, or any desk lamps.

Assess Storage

As you work through your office, you may notice storage systems that look a little worse for wear, or notice that you lack a system. If you have more time, consider creating storage for all of your items. When you have a proper storage system in place you can complete tasks faster and with less stress. Strike a Cord

By - March 30th, 2015

In today’s modern age, cables are a daily part of life. Whether it’s for your ear buds, your charger, or other electronics cables, most chances are that you’ve been frustrated by the tangle of cords. This can impact your productivity and mood. Trying to tackle the cord situation can be difficult, but it can make a big difference in your productivity, but how do you get a personalized solution for your needs? Here are some tips from Closet and Storage Concepts.

Label

Cords can often get tangled because they get entangled with other cords. When you’re searching for a specific cord, you want to get it the first time, without yanking out another cord. The first step to controlling this would be to label. You can either create your own, or buy them. There are a variety of options, whether they’re stickers with an image or words, or snap versions that go around your cord and you can change out the labels and reuse them. For a DIY and budget friendly option, try bread clips. Just use a marker to write what the cord is for or use a label maker. You can choose to label on both ends of the cord or, just one. We usually recommend both ends to make it easy no matter where you are plugging your cord, but use whatever system is best for you.

Bulk

The next step would be to bulk the cords. This can help them in the next step when you start to hide them. While not necessary if you only have a few cords that won’t really show or clutter up your workspace, it can be useful to group like cables together. Try grouping cables that won’t need to be unplugged often. So printers, phones (not cells), and lamps or lights are good options. Keeping laptop, tablet, or phone chargers out of the bundle will mean they can go mobile with you. If you have multiple chargers you can probably keep all of the cables bundled together.

Hide

This might be the trickiest part when getting your cords under control, as you have to get the most creative. There are organizational systems that go behind a desk that can act as a pocket to catch and hide the unsightly cords, and even systems that guide your cords and create organized loops under your desk. Making the cords a focal point by creating loops and patterns along the wall allow you to find the cord you need without disruption to the entire system. Plus they create a pretty unique look.

Custom storage units, whether it’s an entertainment center, office unit, or cupboard charging stations, can provide a seamless look that meets your charging needs while being aesthetically pleasing.

Try hiding cords behind frames that may sit on top of a desk. There are wooden boxes that cover a power strip, but sometimes these look just as much out of place.

Get Creative

No worthwhile storage project is without the benefit of creating a solution that works for you. This can involve any amount of creativity, as the system will be just for you. In an office, this could mean having cords that are completely hidden and ready to be unplugged at a moment’s notice. Or it could mean featuring the cords so that they become a part of the design of your space.

If you crave a photo like the one above that has a minimal amount of cords, look for keyboards, mice, and other gadgets that can connect wirelessly to reduce the amount of cords you have. It can create a minimalist approach that makes your desk and space look larger.

You will also probably get creative with what you group together. You’ll probably have to group your cords around an outlet. If you can, you can get wall outlets behind monitors, or even on the floors. This can help to lessen the visual impact of clutter.

Create a place of productivity and peace by reducing the visual impact of the cords in your life. Need some help creating a cord solution? Give Closet and Storage Concepts a call today for a free consultation!

Re-Energize: New Year, Better Office

By CSC - January 16th, 2015

Office-1

With the New Year often comes a reset after spending some quality time with family and friends to allow for an even more productive year ahead. Here at Closet and Storage Concepts, we’ve already shared some general tips for getting the new year off to a great start, so today we’re diving into organizing an essential space in your home: the office. Here are some ways to get the year off to a great start by re-energizing your home office!

Go Bold

Bold colors can help to energize your space and positively affect your productivity. If you have created an office out of a closet, this is even better as the boldness will be a bit unexpected. Try bright teals, oranges, even fuchsias, or lime greens.

You can feature a bold color in small amounts, if you’d prefer a more neutral desk surface color, such as on your chair fabric, or on the frames of art work.

All Systems Go

A productive office is often an organized office. This doesn’t necessarily have to mean that every surface is pristine; you need a customized solution that fits your unique needs.

For example, some people are naturally pilers not filers. However, this does not mean that their offices are a dump. They have their own system that makes them the most productive. Pilers often create piles to sort out various paperwork and receipts to return to them later. If you are a piler, try out desk trays that can easily stack until you are ready for them. For the filers, there are also a number of stylish options in the forms of portable file cabinets, and dividers for your desk for more urgent documents.

For smaller items, or even crafts, try drawer separators or tins to house them in before setting them into a drawer.

Get Comfy

Well not too comfortable especially if it limits your productivity. However, your office can still be inviting and a good chair can make you comfortable and productive. Pick a chair that provides enough support when you will be writing or typing so as not to cause discomfort or joint problems.

You can also create cool-down zones that offer a relaxing space to take a break after you’ve accomplished a major task. This can come in the form of a sitting area, a nook to read a book, a beanbag, or even a yoga mat. Whatever works best for you, this should be an area that when you come back to your desk you feel refreshed and ready to accomplish even more!

A home office is a great place to start to accomplish your home resolutions this year. If you need some professional advice to gear up your organization, be sure to give Closet and Storage Concepts a call today!

3 Incredibly Cool Celebrity Offices

By CSC - December 15th, 2014

Slider Office-4 JHere at Closet and Storage Concepts of Massachusetts, we love creating beautifully functional spaces. This includes home offices. We create custom solutions to help generate style through organization. Home offices pull double duty as they add personality, but must also be extremely functional for an optimal amount of productivity to occur. Today, we’re showing three interesting celebrity offices to get your juices flowing on how you can achieve similar results, with the help of Closet and Storage Concepts!

Tory Burch’s New York Office

First up is Tory Burch. The fashion designer and CEO of her brand is no stranger to wearing many hats, much like an office does. As can be seen here, in her New York Office she shows off her attention to detail.

As advocates of craftsmanship and detail, we like the grommets in the chair cushions, the finish on the book shelves, and the use of a pin board. Pin boards are great as they allow snippets to be re-shuffled without actually damaging your walls. Adapt a pin board in the closet to hang your jewelry.

This seems very appropriate for her field and is classic Burch: simple, yet elegant and luxurious.

Jessica Alba at The Honest Company

Pictured when Elle stopped by The Honest Company (check out some images here), Jessica Alba has one of the most unique desk colors that we’ve seen here at Closet and Storage Concepts, and we like it. We love being unique given that we create unique storage solutions. Alba’s use of color is great and really perks up a space. With ample drawers, it seems like a great storage solution too! We know that the key to a productive and organized space is having the proper amount of office storage.

Casey Neistat’s Customized NYC Studio

If you’ve heard about or seen any of the director’s videos you’ve also probably heard about his studio. It is probably the most customized office space that we have seen. If you thought customization was just a bunch of malarkey, Neistat’s space is here to prove you wrong. Shown here in this issue of Milk Made, you can see one area of how customized Neistat’s studio is. All of those shelving units were specifically created to fit this space in a way that makes sense for the director to allow optimal time creating movies, not digging for a piece of material. Having a permanent location for each item in his studio reduces messiness and increases productivity; a great mix for a work space. The tangible Facebook wall is a unique element that adds to the space and reflects Neistat’s personality.

If you’re looking to create a unique space that is just as functional and unique, give Closet and Storage Concepts a call. We can show you just how easy and incredible a customized home office can be.
