Great Murphy Bed Moments In Film History

By csc-admin - March 13th, 2014

Anyone living in a metropolis has surely noticed a rising trend in recent years: more and more families are moving back into the city. From San Francisco to Washington D.C., we’re seeing huge numbers of people making the trek back into urban centers, driven by everything from employment to culture. As a result of this suburban exodus, space has become a premium in most megacities, with entire architectural movements built around the idea of micro-housing. Here at Closet and Storage Concepts, we’ve got our own solution for the city dweller looking to squeeze some extra space out of their home or apartment: the Murphy bed. Most folks tend to be familiar with the Murphy bed due to its illustrious and storied career in film and television, showing up in everything from The Three Stooges’ short films to The Pink Panther Strikes Again.  In celebration of this collapsible masterpiece and its cinematic history, we’ve put together a list of three of our favorite Murphy bed starring roles. Read on to find out just how wide-ranging the Murphy bed’s acting chops truly are.

Subub Surprises the Burglar – 1903

Probably the earliest, and easily the most bizarre, cameo made by a Murphy bed comes in the 1903 silent film Subub Surprises the Burglar. It’s easy to think you’re in the midst of a Kenneth Angers picture when watching this surreal early short, which features a black-clad thief attempting to burgle the home of our titular hero, Subub. Things go awry for the dastardly intruder when Subub’s Murphy bed folds up with him inside it, only to reveal that his furniture is equipped with what looks to be six mini-cannons. Needless to say, Subub’s fully-stocked Murphy bed makes short work of the story’s villain, and all is right in this strange corner of the world. Although we can’t recommend building heavy artillery into your wardrobe, we couldn’t help but share this very early, and very odd, look at the Murphy bed’s cinematic debut.

One A.M – 1916

Moving in a slightly less unnerving direction, we come to the master of physical comedy, Charlie Chaplin. This incredible comedic short likely gave rise to the great cinematic trope that is the unruly Murphy bed, and Charlie goes to great lengths to showcase all of the ways you can be squished, smashed, hobbled and prodded by an ill-behaved wall bed. We would like to point out that not all Murphy beds are created equal, and we’re yet to see a Closet and Storage Concepts’ Murphy bed cruelly toy with its owner the way Charlie’s seems to here. Although this short clearly exaggerates many characteristics of the wall bed, it does get one thing right: when you walk into a room with a Murphy bed, you’ll definitely ask yourself, “Where’s the bed?” And that’s a good thing.

The Haunted House – 1929

Tons of cartoons over the years have featured erratic Murphy beds, and Walt Disney employed the conceit numerous times over the years. This short cartoon, called “The Haunted House,” is easily one of the best examples, and features not only a terrified Mickey Mouse running throughout a dilapidated mansion, but also a full-on ghost and ghoul populated orchestra. As much as the entire cartoon is great, we’re obviously most drawn to the skeleton hiding in the Murphy bed. You probably won’t find a full set of bones stashed away in your wall bed anytime soon, but you’re sure to have as much fun transforming your space with a Closet and Storage Concepts Murphy bed as the phantoms in this carton have serenading Mickey with their eerie sounds.

At Closet and Storage Concepts, we install incredibly cool Murphy beds and storage solutions for all kinds of spaces and needs. Our wall beds may not come fortified with anti-burglar systems, and you probably won’t find the undead in any of our stores, but we always offer the best in home organization systems.
